Whiplash
Whiplash is an injury to the neck muscles from rapid forward and backward motion of the neck caused by a trauma.
The injury occurs when your neck jerks back and forth quickly and violently. When whiplash happens, your spine bends past its normal range of motion and may injure the vertebrae of your cervical spine. This neck injury can significantly damage the supporting ligaments and muscles in your neck. While it is usually caused by rear-end collision car accidents, it can also occur as the result of quick jerking of roller coaster rides, contact sports like football, and physical abuse. Depending on the severity of the pull or tear, the symptoms you experience will vary.

Whiplash is most commonly suffered as a result of a road traffic accident and can result in the following:
- The muscles and ligaments supporting the spine can be over-stretched or torn.
- The discs between the vertebrae can bulge, tear or rupture.
- Vertebrae can be forced out of their normal position, reducing range of motion.
- The spinal cord and nerve roots get stretched, irritated and choked.
The appropriate chiropractic treatment is unique to each whiplash injury and is directed at the primary dysfunctions detected during the chiropractic exam.
